A poke is a sack or bag, and the expression "Pig in a poke" refers to a confidence trick originating in the Late Middle Ages, when pig meat was scarce, but cats and dogs were not. You then risked buying a cat or dog in a bag, believing it was a pig, because you did not carefully check what was in the bag.
